While his title reads “Formulation Laboratory Manager”, Jake Lannen is something of a Rosetta Stone between production departments and the front offices. He is often one of the first ones here in the morning and one of the last ones out the door in the evening. You will find him darting from one end of our headquarters to the other; jotting down details of a custom formulation for a wholesale client, heading to our refinement lab to procure materials to concoct products, and presenting new product ideas to our CEO.
Coming to Boulder all the way from The Lonestar State, Jake graduated from Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake Texas. He briefly attended college at University of Oklahoma before dropping out after his sophomore year to heed the call of the mountains. Before landing his role as hemp alchemist, Jake worked jobs in construction and engine part production plants.
About two weeks after moving to Colorado, Jake was taking a hike in the Rockies when he ran into a manager from Extract Labs. The two of them both decided to sit and rest at a spot that overlooked Boulder and talked about how exciting the hemp industry was. Jake was told a job may be possible down the road and after 6 months of constant follow ups, he was finally invited in for an interview. Jake began his career at Extract Labs as a formulation technician before spending a short stint in the refinement laboratory learning how to isolate CBD. He then transitioned back to formulations where he worked his way up to manager.
When asked about why he spent so long waiting for an opportunity to work at the lab, Jake is quick to share how much cannabis impacts his life.
I love cannabis. Cannabis changed my life for the better in so many ways. It helped me get through depression in high school, which in turn allowed me to teach others who were less informed on the positive medicinal properties of the plant. Plus, working here allowed me to learn more about cannabis than had I been employed in the THC industry. The latter being more myopically focused, whereas the CBD space explores the whole plant in various combinations.
