Frank Morgan famously said “Pay no attention to the person behind the curtain!” The same sentiment is carried through by soft-spoken Refinement Engineer Liv Cooley. While they would be much happier to stay hidden behind the scenes, working tirelessly on process optimization, we are pulling the curtain aside so you can see the person responsible for the magic that happens in our lab!
Liv is another member of the Kentucky section of our employees, hailing from Bedford Kentucky. They hold a degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Louisville. Prior to making the move to Colorado, they worked as a chemical engineer at a co-op in the utility industry, and spent some time as a tutor during high school and college.
Hemp wasn’t always the end goal on Liv’s career path, but like many Extract Labs employee stories, the name Craig Henderson came up during the job search.
“I moved out to Colorado in June of 2018 after graduation and was looking for a job and got connected to Craig through the University of Louisville career services department” Liv recalls. “Since we both were UofL alum, they suggested I reached out to him since he had started a business. I got an interview after a couple weeks and was hired about 3 days later!”
A growing passion
Although a hemp novice in the beginning, Liv’s unyielding passion to explore the unknown has driven them to succeed at Extract Labs. Although originally hired for a support role, Liv quickly made it clear that they were ready for the challenge of helping Extract Labs set the standard for the entire hemp industry. The atmosphere of the lab quickly helped translate Liv’s passion for science into a passion for hemp.
“To be completely honest, when I was hired, I knew very little about the hemp industry” they confess. “It has definitely grown on me since I’ve started working here though! It is very challenging work at times, but constantly being on the verge of something big with lifechanging potential is indescribable. I mean, it’s stressful, so I guess I could describe it that way…but I work with some amazing people and it will always be worth the grind.”
Liv is now the right hand of Analytical Development Chemist and Refinement boss Logan Cline, runnning our industrial HPLC while bouncing between assisting lab technicians and our analytical lab. While quiet, reserved, and mission oriented on the clock, her friends tell a different story of who Liv Cooley is.
“Liv is an actual angel” Logan says. “Super talented and probably the funniest person I know. The type of person you wish everyone was; kind, caring, and just genuine ya know?”
At Extract Labs, we are all about helping the good people of the world find relief through clean, honest products. We couldn’t do that without good people working here. Liv is a prime example of good people, and every day we are grateful to have Liv Cooley on our team.
Q&A With Liv
Q: What is your favorite Extract Labs product?
A: That’s a tough one. I would have to say a tie between the Muscle Cream and the Bubba Kush Extract Tank.
Q: Name a book you’ve read that had a major impact on you.
A: You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. It sounds kind of silly, but it encourages people to stop giving themselves excuses and to just start doing what you want to do with your life. It’s a quick read for anyone looking for some personal motivation.
Q: What’s the best thing you’ve ever watched on Netflix?
A: This is also tough because I’ve watched a LOT of Netflix over the years. Due to the current social climate though, I would say Just Mercy. It sheds light on the racial injustices that have existed in the US for years and highlights the infuriating reality of racism that still exists today. We all need to do better and be better.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start working in the hemp industry?
A: Be ready for a constantly evolving workplace. Embrace the change and challenges and you will find it very exciting and extremely rewarding.
