Matt is our first feature from the initial processing section of the company, and has done just about every job there is to do. He started off doing chromatography and distillation, but his drive to learn didn’t stop there. He spent time as an extraction operator before landing as our Winterization lead. His current role is a critical part of our process, as winterization directly impacts the quality of every step of the process after it.
Matt is from Potomac Maryland, a suburb located northwest of Washington DC. After graduating from Winston Churchill High School, he studied at Montgomery College where he obtained an Associate of Biological Sciences. Following his college career, Matt worked as a professional gold caddie for about 7 years. He started close to home at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, one of the premier golf courses in the greater DC area. His hard work at TPC paid off, and gave him the opportunity to travel the country participating in pro events.
Umph Love to Hemp Love
While the opportunity to travel as a caddie was exciting for Matt, he found himself yearning for a career that allowed him to use his degree. That opportunity presented itself in a totally unexpected way: an Umphrey’s McGee concert in 2017.
“I met a manager selling Extract Labs Shatter at a Red Rocks show” Matt recalls. “I loved the quality of the product and was offered a tour of the lab. During my tour I recognized the distillation equipment from my schooling and asked for a job.”
At the time, the hemp industry was still extremely young. The thought of getting to put his degree to work in a very new and relatively unknown industry was enticing. After almost 6 months of waiting, Matt finally got the call he was anxiously anticipating, and landed the job as a lab tech in March 2018. He is now happily putting his schooling to work, applying his knack for science to produce clean, dependable CBD for the good people of the world, and he couldn’t be more excited to be doing it!
