In this blog, we will be demonstrating how to make hemp gummies, a grown-up version of the sugar-dusted snack that makes you feel good and tastes great.
It is surprisingly easy to make hemp gummies, and there are many variations on how you can flavor them. In this recipe, we will use fruit juice instead of flavored gelatin for a more natural taste. Feel free to experiment and know that you have an array of options!
HEMP GUMMIES RECIPE
Servings | Prep Time | Total Time |
30 to 40 gummies | 15 minutes | 1 hour |
INGREDIENTS
- Scary silicone molds
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1 cup of fruit juice of your choice
- 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin
- Cooking spray
- Hemp oil tincture
- Small bowl of sugar to coat the finished gummies
Silicone candy molds are readily available online. You can buy classic shapes for hemp gummy bear recipes or simple shapes like cubes or squares. Make sure that they are bite-size molds, so you get an appropriate serving of hemp. Anything too large would be impractical and difficult to dose.
The honey and fruit juice flavor the gummies. You can use whatever type of juice you want. For a healthier candy, opt for 100 percent fruit juice like pomegranate or lime. The honey will sweeten the recipe. Also, be sure to avoid pulpy juice, which would alter the texture of the gummy.
The unflavored gelatin binds the ingredients together and gives the gummies their texture. If you wanted to take an easier route, you could ditch the juice and honey and simply use traditional flavored gelatin and blend that with the unflavored gelatin. The unflavored gelatin creates a firmer texture, so just know that you must use unflavored gelatin in either version.
You will need the cooking spray to lightly coat the inside of the silicone mold, making it easier to release the gummies once they have solidified.
Finally, hemp oil is necessary to infuse the gummies. You can also use hemp isolate as it is easy to dose and measure in powder form.
HOW TO MAKE HEMP OIL GUMMIES
INSTRUCTIONS
- First, add 1 cup of juice to a saucepan and heat until it is lightly simmering.
- Once the juice starts simmering, add 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin and two tablespoons of honey. Whisk all the ingredients together until they are fully blended into the liquid.
- Take the liquid off the heat. Add the desired amount of hemp oil to the mixture. We recommend 4 to 8 milliliters of a hemp tincture that is 1000 or 2000 milligrams in strength. If there are a lot of bubbles in the liquid, you can gently heat the whole mixture again to smooth it out.
- Spray a paper towel lightly with baking spray and lightly coat the molds with the oil.
- After the hemp oil is blended in, it’s time to start filling the molds. You can do this by carefully pouring from a pitcher or by using a large dropper to avoid spills and bubbles.
- Put the gummy molds into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. If bubbles form on the top of the mold, you can scrape them away with a spoon. Some people do not like the texture this creates.
- Remove the gummies from the molds.
- Optional: Rolling each piece in a bowl of sugar coats the gummies for a finishing touch.
HOW TO PROPERLY DOSE GUMMIES
A medium-size mold holds about 250 milliliters of liquid. That’s a little over a cup (236 milliliters). One cup of the liquid should make about 30 to 35 gummies. So if 528 milligrams (8 full droppers of 2000 mg strength tincture) of hemp is used per recipe, that would be anywhere from 15 to 17 milligrams of hemp per gummy. If you want a lower dose, add four droppers of 2000 mg strength hemp for 7 to 8 milligrams of hemp per gummy.
HOW TO MAKE HEMP ISOLATE GUMMIES
To make gummies with hemp isolate, follow the exact instructions listed above, except add around 250 to 550 milligrams of powdered isolate instead of tincture oil once you reach step three. Make sure to stir in the isolate until it is fully dissolved, smooth, and evenly distributed.
HOW DO HEMP GUMMIES LAST?
Finished candies should be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will become too dense and chewy to eat if kept out. Since these homemade gummies are not processed, they will not last as long as store-bought candy. We recommend eating the treats within two weeks. A large batch can be made to freeze, which will store well for the entire year. Keep in mind that frozen gummies will be chewier than fresh ones. Frozen gummies are still delicious and safe to eat.
HEMP & HEAT
Many people worry that adding hemp to heat will kill off the compounds, and it’s true, you don’t want to overheat an oil extraction or isolate. But hemp doesn’t start to degrade until around 320 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mixing hemp into the warm gelatin liquid would not damage the potency. You can get away with baking hemp at certain temperatures but don’t add hemp to direct heat for dishes that require frying and sauteing. At these temps, certain benefits are likely to dissipate.
IS IT LEGAL TO MAKE HEMP GUMMIES
Absolutely! Hemp was legalized by the federal government in 2018. All hemp that contains less than 0.3 percent of THC is legal nationally. One caveat to note is that full spectrum hemp, which contains less than 0.3 percent of THC, could result in a failed drug test.
