Nevada was the first to legalize CBD for pets treatment. Now doctors can prescribe CBD without fear of disciplinary action from the state licensing board.

In humans, CBD has potential to relieve discomfort and tension, calm behavioral disposition, and help recovery.

Animals, like humans, have endocannabinoid systems. Canines, however, contain higher concentration of CB1 receptors. Making them more receptive to CBD.

From research CBD for pets is seen to maintain a calm disposition, tension, and balance overall health.

Nevada is the first state to allow veterinarians to openly recommend CBD for pets. With this change, animal doctors can now discuss hemp-derived products without fear of disciplinary action from the state licensing board. Before the bill, it was unclear whether vets could even mention CBD, so many avoided the topic altogether.

The bill’s sponsor, state assemblyman Steve Yeager, explained that the lack of clarity in the law prevented veterinarians from discussing CBD, even when pet owners asked about it. The new policy also helps vets guide owners toward high-quality options and away from unreliable products, reducing confusion.

“I certainly hope that other states follow Nevada’s lead and provide reassurances to licensed veterinarians that they can talk about CBD without fear of facing disciplinary proceedings,” Yeager said in an American Veterinary Medical Association article. “The bill itself is fairly simple and, thus, is a good model for other states.”

Because animals also have endocannabinoid systems, some veterinarians have been interested in how CBD might contribute to temporary states such as calm, balance, or everyday comfort in pets.

Beyond the scientific studies, there is also a wealth of anecdotes from pet parents who have tried CBD with their animals. A U.S.-based survey by Leafreport found that about 50 percent of 1,448 respondents used CBD for their pets, often based on a veterinarian’s recommendation. Most said they gave it to help their pets feel calmer or more at ease during overstimulating situations, and many reported positive experiences.

The new law takes effect on October 1. Between owner experiences, emerging research, and Nevada’s policy change, it seems likely that more states will eventually recognize CBD as a plant-based option for supporting the comfort and balance of our four-legged companions.
