Originating from the beautiful sun-kissed shores of Hawaii, Spam Musubi is the epitome of comfort food. Its humble beginnings date back to World War II when Spam (short for spiced ham) was introduced to the islands. Islanders welcomed it with open arms and open mouths, and it’s since earned a place of honor in the rich tapestry of Hawaiian cuisine.
It’s eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even as a snack in between – much like how we find any excuse to catch some extra zzz’s on a Sunday. Hawaiians love their Spam Musubi so much that it’s become a convenience store staple – think of it as Hawaii’s answer to the mainland’s hot dogs.
So, we’ve met our first star. But before we rush into our cooking adventure, let’s meet the guest of honor that we’re adding to this culinary fiesta: CBD. Hang tight, foodie adventurers, because we’re just getting started!
How to Make Spam Musubi
Ingredients
- 1 can of Spam, sliced into 8 even pieces
- 2 cups of sushi rice, cooked
- 2 droppers of CBD oil (the dosage can be adjusted according to your preference and the product’s instructions)
- 4 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 pack of sushi nori, cut into strips
- A musubi press (If you don’t have one, don’t panic! You can use the Spam can itself, just be careful!)
Extract Labs Tip:
Going vegetarian? Swap out the Spam for firm tofu. Just slice it into Spam-sized pieces and marinate as usual. You’ll get a Musubi that’s as satisfying as the orignial.
Instructions
- First, let’s make our sushi rice even more special. Once your sushi rice is cooked, while it’s still warm, gently mix in your CBD oil. This helps it spread evenly throughout the rice.
- In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce and sugar until the sugar is fully dissolved. This will be your marinade.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add your Spam slices and sear them until they’re lightly browned. Then, pour the soy sauce-sugar mixture over the Spam slices. Let them simmer in the marinade, flipping occasionally, until the slices are well-coated and the marinade has caramelized. It’s like giving your Spam a spa day!
- Now, it’s time for assembly! Place a strip of nori on a clean surface, then position your musubi press (or cleaned Spam can) in the center. Fill the press with a layer of your special CBD-infused rice, pressing it down to pack it tightly. Next, place a caramelized Spam slice on top. Press it down gently to make sure everything sticks together.
- Carefully lift the musubi press (or Spam can), leaving your almost-complete Spam Musubi on the nori strip. Roll the nori around the rice and Spam, moistening the end with a bit of water to seal it up. You did it!
- Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients, and voila! You’ve got a stack of delicious CBD Spam Musubi ready to serve.
Incorporating CBD into food products provides a convenient and enjoyable way to harness its potential benefits, like potentially reduce stress levels or improve sleep patterns (1).
